Gympie Ultimate Steam Festival
The Mary Ann
This is a faithful replica of the first steam locomotive built in Queensland in 1873, serving on timber lines in Cooloola National Park. Based in Maryborough, and operated by Volunteers, the replica is on its second visit to Gympie, running on Rattler rails north from Gympie in open carriages made from timbers once hauled by the original MaryAnn. Beautiful machinery and an even more gentle pace than the Rattler. Please note that a prior booking means the MaryAnn is with us only for the Sunday and Monday – so please book early.

The original 1870s Mary Ann was an 8 horse-power locally-built locomotive and hauled Kauri Pine logs from the woods to tidewater. The replica Mary Ann was built in Maryborough and operates every Thursday and the last Sunday of the month (0900-1400 hrs) in Queens Park close to the CBD.
The Original Mary Ann was designed to haul Kauri Pine logs from the Cooloola forests to Tin Can Bay. The engine hauled trucks of logs on a wooden tramway, the sleepers and rails for which were milled with a circular saw driven by the engine.
The Replica Mary Ann was built as a tourist attraction for the City of Maryborough in 1999 by Wm Olds and Sons Pty Ltd. The replica is operated by volunteers of the Maryborough Whistle Stop Inc on the 3 foot 6 inch gauge Queensland Rail tracks in Queens Park on the last Sunday of every month, on special occasions and each Thursday "Maryborough Market Day" also at Queens Park.

The Mary Ann will be operating from the historic Old Gympie Station at Tozer Street, Gympie on Sunday and Monday during the Gympie Ultimate Steam Festival. See the map below for the location of the Old Gympie Station.
